Let me begin by saying I am a card-carrying liberal, tree hugger, save the whales type of individual, am I naïve to believe in four little words, “What Would Jesus Do,” that all human beings have a responsibility to be their brothers and sisters keeper, in this day and time maybe I am naive. I served in the United States Army as an Airborne Infantryman, I was not a conscientious objector, I fought and fought with passion and love for the ideals and beliefs of my country, our country, the country we call home, and I will honorably fight again if called. I have taken the lives of my fellow-man, my enemy, and I don’t feel any remorse or feel that I have to justify my actions as an American soldier to anyone, right or wrong it was done and my God will judge me not you. Call me crazy but I think more government will allow more Americans to live a blissful life. Recently I was asked about the NSA playing big brother, my reply was, “For all his glory, right or wrong, my biological older brother looked out for me and helped me survive one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After 9/11 we were all afraid but enraged, we wanted to rip the hearts out of anyone that threatened America, Americans, and our way of life. We were horrified watching our brothers and sisters leaping from burning buildings, they were Americans, they were you and I, and they were us. So we accepted legal or illegal ways to strike back at our enemy, fuck Civil Liberties, we want revenge, ENTER THE PATRIOT ACT.
The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 is an Act of Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. The title of the act is a ten letter acronym (USA PATRIOT) that stands for Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001.
The act, as a response to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, significantly weakened restrictions on law enforcement agencies’ gathering of intelligence within the United States; expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions, particularly those involving foreign individuals and entities; and broadened the discretion of law enforcement and immigration authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants suspected of terrorism-related acts. The act also expanded the definition of terrorism to include domestic terrorism, thus enlarging the number of activities to which the USA PATRIOT Act’s expanded law enforcement powers can be applied.
On May 26, 2011, President Barack Obama signed the PATRIOT Sunsets Extension Act of 2011, a four-year extension of three key provisions in the USA PATRIOT Act: roving wiretaps, searches of business records (the “library records provision”), and conducting surveillance of “lone wolves” — individuals suspected of terrorist-related activities not linked to terrorist groups.
This is a quick summary of the Patriot Act, my fellow liberals that have a problem with the Act please debate it with the spouses and children of the victims of 9/11 not radio and television pundits. Do I believe this to be an overreach by the government who is tasked with protecting all Americans? Yes! But if it works and keeps us safe. Do I think that in the hands of a leader that is less moral and ethical than our current President that this Act will be used for ill-gotten gain? Yes! But if it works and keeps us safe? Has the Patriot Act proven its worth? Show me one American that was harmed mentally or physically by the Act. And let’s not be coy, we are talking about the Patriot Act and its application.
I tell my friends and colleagues that me being a black man in America has prepared me for big brother looking over my shoulder in an authoritarian fashion, pushing me to commit an illegal act or deterring me from committing an illegal act. I’m not stupid enough to think that my government, your government, our big brother isn’t watching, because they are, stay vigilant big brother.
